Location: Continental Centre, 1111-3779 Sexsmith Road, Richmond
The Molangs came to Yuu Japanese Tapas for a late lunch/quick snack on a Saturday afternoon. This is a restaurant in the Continental Centre, so parking easy and free. Note: if you don’t want to deal with lol Richmond drivers, park near TD because there’s going to be more vacant spots.
Despite the restaurant name, this place served a wide range of Japanese food. Other than tapas, you may also order ramen, yakisoba, rice bowls, sizzling plates, hot pot, and desserts. They also serve 4 pages worth of specialty drinks (mostly concoctions of fruit + Calpis/pop).
Although the tapas are reasonably priced (~$5-$9), they are mostly fried dishes, and we didn’t feel like ordering any of them. Instead, we chose ramen and a drink.
Ramen in hot & sour tonkotsu broth (topped with BBQ pork, cheese, bean sprouts, and corn) + Hello Kitty (strawberry + Calpis)
Let’s talk about the drink first. It didn’t come with a fresh strawberry like it was shown on the menu picture. I suspect they mixed strawberry powder and Calpis. It was a bit sweet but still refreshing. It was also a bit fizzy; almost more like a strawberry pop than strawberry Calpis.
As for the ramen, I would say the portion size was generous. Two Molangs felt full after eating it. The broth was more spicy than it was sour. It was almost like drinking kimchi soup. The pork was tender and flavourful. I don’t know what kind of cheese they used. If I were to guess, I would say it was some kind of mozzarella. In my opinion, it didn’t add much to the flavour of the ramen, but the gooey texture was quite interesting (in a positive way).
By the way, our ramen was made surprisingly quick. They served it to us within 5 minutes after ordering.
Molang Scores & Verdict
The tapas selection didn’t look too enticing for us… Perhaps we’ll try them next time. Maybe those are their specialties.
