[Review] Maruwa Restaurant

Maruwa Sushi Japanese Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Address: 11300 Steveston Hwy, Richmond, BC V7A 5J5

Greater Vancouver is home to a plethora of Japanese restaurants, which means there is always a lot to choose from! One sunny evening, we stumbled upon Maruwa Restaurant, which is tucked inside Ironwood Plaza in Richmond. The reviews on Yelp and Zomato seemed positive, so we decided to give it a try.

We were a little concerned at first because the restaurant was empty at 6PM. Alright, it was a week night, but it was a little eerie…but another table did have a reserve sign on it, so perhaps people eat late?

Spicy Tuna with Chili Oil – $6.00

This was essentially tuna sashimi drowned in a mixture of chili and sesame oil, green onion and tobiko. It was a bit too salty for our liking, but it was nevertheless quite an interesting dish. Probably wouldn’t order it again, especially at $6!

Philadelphia Roll – $4.99

I cannot speak for the other Molang, but I personally LOVE Philly rolls. The combination of cream cheese, salmon (sashimi not smoked) and avocado is just heavenly. I love the texture, the taste and everything about it. With that being said, I have very high standards when it comes to a good Philadelphia roll – it has to have the right proportion of ingredients. Maruwa’s Philadelphia roll was OK – it tasted quite good but it wasn’t outstanding. For $4.99 – it’s not a bad deal.

Winter California Roll – $7.95

Imagine a California roll topped with the same creamy, cheesy sauce used for motoyaki oysters. That is the Winter California Roll in a nutshell, with the chef’s special “winter” sauce as the highlight. Very innovative roll – we felt like we were eating baked cheese rolls. Honestly, I would never pay more than $5 for California roll, but I guess restaurants can get away with it by adding special sauces and extra ingredients, i.e. Alaska Rolls and Dynamite Rolls.

Dragon Roll – $7.95

It’s difficult to mess up a Dragon Roll. This was my favourite dish of the evening – made fresh with hot (not cold!) prawn tempura, unagi, tobiko and avocado. We liked the texture of the Dragon Roll, and the presentation was quite nice too.

Overall, we’ve had better food and experiences at other Japanese restaurants. The waitress was very attentive, and poured tea into our cups without us asking. I guess we cannot complain about having a whole restaurant to ourselves for the duration of the meal.

Molang Scores & Verdict

We’ve had better. Not bad if you want a quick fix before going to the movies.
